2023 SAM PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The hockey and figure skating committees have done an excellent job leading their groups to another successful season. The Skating Association of Maine (SAM) Board of Directors wants to say thank you again for everyone who volunteers for SAM.  As you all know this is a volunteer organization and we cannot be successful without your help. Please reach out to your Committee Chairs if you would like to volunteer for SAM.

2023 SAM TREASURER REPORT

Treasurer’s Report

March 26, 2023

The Skating Association of Maine has wrapped up another successful Fall/Winter season.  This year we grew our SAM membership and welcomed skaters from many communities throughout the state to be a part of our many teams and programs.

As in previous years, SAM held a variety of fundraisers that contributed to our scholarship and education programs and we thank all of our members for their participation in these efforts. We also had support from local businesses and community members and we appreciate their continued support in keeping youth involved in skating and hockey.

We congratulate all of our SAM members for their achievementsagain this year.  Our figure skaters took part in successful competitions, exhibitions and test sessions and our hockey teamsenjoyed another great season where they participated in a variety of local tournaments and competed for state and local titles.  We are proud of all their accomplishments and successes this year and look forward to seeing them back on the ice soon.

Happy skating,

Heather Knowles,

Treasurer

2023 SAM PUBLICITY REPORT

Public relations report

The Skating Association of Maine earned publicity this year through promotion of the SAM events to promote skating programs and events at the rink, including Skate with Santa, Skate Your Heart Out and various youth and adult classes.

Key decisions were also made about hockey and figure skating events, policies and enforcement. There we very few incidents this year, all issues were handled well through the board's decision making process.

SAM continues to improve it’s outreach and engagement with new members by using the website www.maineskaters.com and social media, including more Facebook videos.

2023 SAM HOCKEY REPORT

2022-2023 SAM Moose Hockey Tier IV Annual Report

SAM Moose Tier IV Hockey had a very strong season in terms of participation.  We had 2 6U teams, 4 8U teams, 3 10U teams, 3 12U teams, 1 14U team, and 1 16U/18U team on the ice this season.  We had close to 200 skaters in total in these divisions.  8U/10U/12U/14U were all able to participate in two tournaments along with a season of at least 20 games.  6U played 10 games and went to two jamborees.   We also facilitated a middle girls hockey team comprised of players from 13 different schools.  It was a great atmosphere and very important part of our program.  Our Atoms program had strong numbers as well, with over 100 registrations between both sessions.

The Hockey Steering Committee had high turnover from last season.  We learned as we went and with effective communication, hard work, and dedication we focused on making better players and having fun.

I would like to recognize every member of the committee for their hard work and determination.  We built off of each other’s strengths and worked with one focus and that was providing an atmosphere of fun and learning for our players.

The Hockey Steering Committee recognizes the need to increase our level of competition and have secured 2 skills coaches exclusive for Tier IV next season.  Ray Jean, who is a volunteer coach and owner at Own the Crease goalie school will be our goalie coach.  Alex Drulia has been brought in for power skating and skills.  Alex is a Tier II 18U coach a well as the skills coach for Maine Moose travel hockey.  We feel both additions will catapult SAM Moose Hockey forwards.

On behalf of the Hockey Steering Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the dedicated coaches, parents and volunteers which make the hockey experience at SAM a positive one for all.

Thank You

Steve Jewell

Chair, SAM Moose Hockey
