SAM has made great strides over the last few years in moving our programs forward and providing amazing programs for our skaters. I want to recognize,  congratulate and thank all who have volunteered for SAM this last year.    If you are interested in volunteering next year please reach out to Steve Jewell or Mark Ellis, as there are many opportunities where you can provide assistance.

Congratulations to the SAM skaters and coaches!

Thank you,

Figure Skating Report

The season for SAM Learn to Skate (LTS) and Figure Skating started with our annual Figure Skating Camp that started on July 18, 2024 and ended on July 20, 2024. Ten skaters that consisted of seven youths and 3 adults enjoyed expertise and attention from  our guest coach Elin Schran from the Skating Club of Boston and SAM  coaches Keilys Arvelo and Priscilla Partridge.

Saturday and Monday figure skating sessions continued throughout the summer with approximately 15 skaters consistently utilizing our ice offerings.

Our LTS skaters, figure skaters, and the public were guests at two events we hosted this year – Skate with Santa and Skate with your Sweetheart. We had planned a Halloween event, but canceled it due to the tragic shooting in Lewiston. The shooter was still at large the day of the event and for the safety of our skaters and community, we called the event off.

Thanks to Coach Melissa Emerson and many volunteers, our Compete USA competition – Skate Your Heart Out on February 19 – was very successful.  We had nineteen (19) more competitors, which represented a 30% increase over last year. Additionally, we held a figure skating test session the same morning of the competition.

Our Learn to Skate USA program remains strong. To date, we have had 357 individual registrations (which includes repeat registrations) over four (4) sessions and one (1) mini-session. In Session 1, we had 51 skaters compared to 64 last season. In Session 2, we had 83 skaters compared to 79 last season. In Session 3, we had 109 skaters compared to 94 last season. And in session 4, we had 114 skaters compared to 130 last season.

The slight fluctuation in numbers are due to the changes we made this season were as follows:

  • Due to the scarcity of coaching resources, we eliminated the Hockey Edge program.
  • For the same reason, we eliminated one (1) Snowplow Sam timeslot.
  • To expand real estate on the ice, we moved Adult Skills from Monday evenings to Saturday mornings.

Our season continues with Session 5 is currently scheduled for May 6, 2024 to June 17, 2024.

In Figure Skating/LTS governance, the committee elected Elise Waber Hays as President, Keilys Arvelo as Finance Director, and Jennifer Miller as Development Director.

Our goals for the upcoming season and beyond include:

  • Increasing the number of students in the figure skating program.
  • Revive the hockey skating skills program.

Respectfully submitted,

Mark Ellis

Hockey Report

2023-2024 SAM Moose Hockey Tier IV Annual Report

Sam Moose Tier IV Hockey had another great season with high participation rates. We fielded 1-6U, 4-8U, 2-10U, 3-12U, and 1-14U Team. Our overall number of skaters remained the same as last season, but we had heavier teams this season. We facilitated another Girls Middle School Team in the SMMSL and sent our 8U Girls to three all girl jamborees. We remain focused on making sure our girls have the same opportunities as they grow and look for creative ways to keep them on the ice.

Our Learn to Play program remains strong with over one hundred registrations between our two sessions. I would like to thank Mrs. Prescott’s generosity for continuing to support the program and making it free, for all skaters’ families as they make their first steps into the SAM family.

I would like to recognize every member of the Hockey Steering Committee for their hard work and determination. We built off each other’s strengths and worked with one focus and that was providing an atmosphere of fun and learning for our players.

A major goal this season was to raise our level of competition this season. The addition of our skills coaches and our players and coaches’ hard work made this possible. This season we hadfour out of six teams qualify for the MEAHA North Conference tournament, where last season we did not opt in. Our 8U teams swept the top three spots at this season’s Mid-Coast Classic. Out of 10 U teams brought home silver and bronze medals at the inaugural SAM Holiday Classic hosted by us at the Ice Vault. We are looking forward to the second annual tournament next year and plans are already underway.

This season we brought back Hockey Night in Maine, SAM’s summer hockey league, which had been on hiatus since COVID. We had eight teams of players playing games all summer long. It was a remarkable success and registrations for the 2024 summer are starting stronger than last.

The 2023-2024 season brought back Extended Play sessions for 8U-10U-12U. USA Hockey allowed a limited 8U full ice season that we participated in. Our team went undefeated until the final game of the Mid-Coast Classic falling in a heartbreaker. 9-1 overall is certainly a record to be proud of. Our 10U and 12U teams are preparing for The Ocean State Spring Fling. We are getting ready to play Tier IV teams from all over New England in Providence, RI.

Led by our Registrar, SAM started a new annual tradition this season. Each age group was able to play a game on the ice at The Cross Insurance Arena in Portland and then attend a Maine Mariners game with their teams and families. Between skaters and family members we had over three hundred people attend.

On behalf of the Hockey Steering Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to thank allthe dedicated coaches, parents and volunteers who made the hockey experience at SAM a positive one for all.

Thank You

Steve Jewell
